What Makes Employees Most Happy at Work?

Posted by Insightlink on 02/12/14

When you own a company, you need to have employees. However, this in itself is not enough. These employees need to be happy. The reasons are simple; happy employees use fewer sick days, work harder, and retain customers better than unhappy, disengaged employees. One way to find out what makes your employees tick is through an employee survey. These surveys can be crucial in determining just what you can do to make your employees happier.
Here are some things that are important to employees:
  • A work/life balance
  • Better recognition for what they do
  • Better job security
  • More break periods in the work day, especially ones outside
  • A positive work relationship with superiors
  • A good balance of pay vs. benefits
Just making a small change in your organization has the ability to impact your employees. Consider Chevron; they have personal trainers who conduct stretch breaks with office staff for 10-minute breaks during the day. Not only does this help keep employees happy and healthy, but it also increases productivity. Another small change to consider is allowing music in the workplace. A study of UK businesses found that 77% of organizations found that music helped motivate their employees.
A majority of people stay at a job because they enjoy it. However, to keep these employees happy, offering more than just their job is key. In a recent survey, almost 80% of workers said that recognition for their hard work was desired. This is something that is so simple to change, and, in doing so, will affect your business in a good way.
