We interviewed over 17,000 workers across North America to find out what they want most at work. And what employees want more than anything else is to be recognized for the work they do. Across the continent, being recognized, and yes being rewarded too, is what employees crave most. What the survey also revealed was that these same employees who want to be recognized feel their employers fail to provide it. The discrepancy may seem like bad news but we hope employers will see this as an enormous opportunity.
Still, we know from experience that for many organizations it is a difficult step to take because it exposes weaknesses that will make some people uncomfortable. Many of us tend to avoid problems and would rather deny they exist. However the reality of life is that ignoring a problem never eliminates it so taking action is the only path to real change and a better, healthier and happier workplace.
And we know the time, money and effort is worth it because when employee engagement scores soar, their organizations soar too. It is what we call the ‘Pay Back loop’ where organizations that invest in reward and recognition get paid back by producing engaged employees who are more likely to stay, share their enthusiasm with their clients and customers and take fewer sick days.
