Employee Engagement and Outcomes

Posted by Insightlink on 02/06/14

It has been established that employee engagement does help businesses to prosper. However, the full effects of this are not completely transparent. Many studies have been done to try to see the whole impact of employee engagement on the company.

Disengaged employees definitely bring a business down, so what about engaged employees? There are over 30 studies that show correlation in several key areas when it comes to engaged employees:

  • Lower turnover
  • Less absenteeism
  • Fewer accidents
  • Better customer service
  • More productivity
  • Higher sales and profits

This research shows great promise on how employee engagement helps a business. However, what about the costs? There is a high level of discretionary effort required to receive these results. Other studies have shown that employee satisfaction precedes the business outcome. All this means is that to reap the benefits of a better business outcome, you need to invest in employee engagement.

Once the employees are engaged, customer satisfaction and better profits will follow. At least this is how it pans out for a long-term objective. In the short-term, the opposite could be true, where a thriving business will keep employees engaged. However, the research shows that, after a year, the engagement will drop off if there is not a significant effort to keep employees happy.  Keeping employees happy means finding what they want most out of their jobs.

Completing an in-depth survey should give you an idea of what you can do to work towards engagement. Dispatching the changes will equal a possibly significant investment, but the rewards of this can equal so much more.

Look at Google, the top company to work for in 2014. Their employees are very happy, due to the number of benefits and perks, and the overall work environment.
