5 "Watch Outs" for HR Managers when Hiring

By Evan J Roth, Executive Director www.resumeedge.com

If you're posting a job in this stagnant economy, you're likely seeing hundreds, perhaps thousands, of resumes from candidates with varying qualifications. Want to make the best use of your time? Watch out for these warning signs when reviewing resumes, and you'll cut through the clutter to quickly identify the most qualified candidates:
  1. The What-I-Want Objective: Resumes that give an employer a wish list indicate a desire to get more than one might give. Look instead for a summary of skills or a professional profile which instead tells you what the candidate offers.

  2. Accomplishments That Aren't: Without the results, they're daily duties and have little impact. Watch instead for dollar figures, percentages, and time periods which quantify the size and scope of successful accomplishments. For example: "Grew sales 38% within six months through targeted cold calling, representing a $100,000 increase in revenue."

  3. Buried Skills: If you find important certifications, licensure, or multilingual capabilities at the end of the resume, they're probably not as impressive as they sound. If they're in the opening summary, they shouldn't be overlooked.

  4. Listing Hobbies or Interests: Candidates with a skydiving hobby are likely a liability to your health plan. Pay attention instead to those that support career goals.

  5. Failure to Target: If you get a one-size-fits-all resume without regard to your industry or specific company, keep looking. Candidates who take the time to target you and your business are likely to take the same care and consideration on the job.
